Learning how to write HTML codes is an important skill that any web designer should have. Once you start getting your website ready to go online, you’re going to need to know at least some HTML. We’ll talk more about HTML again soon. Knowing this is fairly crucial to building web pages, and it’s not really so boring or hard to figure out either.

Below is a list of the most common HTML tags used to help beginners become familiar with this language.

1. <HTML></HTML> – are the opening and closing tags used at the beginning and end of each HTML file.

2. <HEAD></HEAD> – comes after the <HTML> tag and it is where information that is not displayed on the website can be found. It includes META tags, style sheets and Java Scripts.

3. <TITLE></TITLE> – is enclosed within the HEAD tags and it is where the title of the web page is placed.

4. <BODY></BODY> – it is within these tags that the things displayed on the website can be found.

5. <EM></EM> – the tag stands for emphasis. It replaced the <I></I> tags which were used to make the text inside the tags italicized.

6. <STRONG></STRONG> – are tags used to make the text within them bold.

7. <H1></H1> to <H6></H6> – are used for headers. Placing text within any of these tags makes the font larger or smaller than the normal text and bold.

8. <P></P> – placing text within these tags turns them into a single paragraph. A single line break is automatically added below the last line of the displayed text.

Just to get used to what HTML looks like and how it’s written, for now just start viewing the “source code” of various pages you visit. Don’t try to figure it all out yet or you risk getting put off a bit. Just look it over every now and then and get an idea how it is structured.

So if you had already registered a domain name as suggested in a previous post, then you could set up as many email addresses on it as you need. You could have one for each member of your staff, or one address specifically to receive general enquiries or create one for the sales department. You could also have one just for your tech department or whatever you need. Your options are much greater when you own your own domain and you will look that much more professional in the eyes of your customers.

For example, you may see someone’s email address on a business card that says joesplumbing (at) hotmail.com. But if his email address were sales (at) joesplumbing.com then he would seem to be more professional even if he was really a carpenter and not even a plumber at all. The point is that in the eyes of your potential customer, you will be seen as more professional, reliable and stable once they notice your email address. And they haven’t even been to your site yet.

One of the features with all hosting plans is a certain number of email address that you can have, and they almost always include way more than you will ever need. Some hosting plans will allow you 10 email address and some plans give you an unlimited amount. Choose a hosting plan that will allow you to go in and create your own as you need them, rather than having to ask your host to create them. You will also be able to create autoresponders, and this is something that will return to the sender a pre-made message of your choosing if you wanted to.

You could say, for example, send an email to such and such an address for more information. And then it will automatically send the people back an email with that info. In that email you could include links to any page(s) on your website, or whatever you want. In some cases this could help you to cut back on the amount of work that someone in your company does just by answering commonly asked questions.

Another feature of email accounts on your own domain name is that you can choose your passwords or set one of your addresses as the default email that will catch all the emails sent to your domain in case anyone mispells something. You could also have a copy of every email received by any address on your domain sent to another address of your choosing without the other person even knowing… if you wanted to. Some people do like to spy on their fellow employees, and that’s a pretty easy way to do it right there. Do not respond and never accidentally click on that “confirm email received” box or else your cover will be blown.

In short, using an email address for your company that is on your own domain as opposed to using a free service will make you look much more professional and will also give you alot more options as well.

Once you know which domain name you would like to have, you’ll have to search it online and see if it is available. Sometimes this can be quite frustrating because all the names you may want seem to be taken. You may find that your company name is already taken, and you’ll have to try different combinations of what you do want until you find something that is available.

It is best to search for a .com address as opposed to a .ca or .us address. A dot com address seems to be more recognized as being for business use and is the most recommended extension for sure. If you do find that every .com domain you want is gone already, you can try a .ca address as a second option, and you’ll find that there are alot more possibilities with that extension.

You don’t have to have someone else register a domain for you. This is a very simple process that anyone can do, and it will take only about five minutes. Finding an available domain that you want in the first place will probably be harder.

There are several places where you can search for available domains online, and some sites have useful features like domain suggestions where you can type in a keyword and it will list several possibilities. If you already know the name you want, go to http://www.look.ca and select the business section, and from there you can search for the name you want.

If you’re having trouble choosing a domain name and want the help of those online tools, go to http://www.whois.sc/members/. This site has alot of cool features that I’ve often used. You can see who owns any domain you search for, use the domain suggestion tools, create a list of those domain names that you want to watch, and they’ll even email you whenever any change happens… there’s all kinds of cool free features there if you want them.

For those people who want to eventually get their own website up but will not be doing it now for various reasons, I’d recommend that you at least start searching for the name you want now, and if you find it register it right away. This can be very handy to have for your business right now, even if you do not have a website yet. Once you own your own domain, with a small hosting plan you can create as many email addresses that you want to at yourdomain.com. We will cover this in more detail later.

First, you must understand that it is a rip off to get companies to design websites for you. Have you ever seen those advertisements in newspaper classified ad sections that offer a 5-page website at $500? These companies are established companies with physical locations, therefore they have to increase the amount they charge to pay off some overheads: office rent, designer’s wages, advertising costs and so on.

Therefore, it would be wise to find freelance designers who work from home. These people are often working from home so they do not have a high operation cost like that of a company. On the other hand, they will be able to design images with quality similar to those of designers from big companies, so it’s a “no-brainer” choice.

However, choose freelancers with care. The best way to do this would be to go to elance.com. There, you can post the abstract of your project and get thousands of freelancers to bid on your project, so you will surely get the best deal. Next, would hiring a professional be affordable? Is it the best option? For simple websites, we could always pick up the coding, or even use programs, as it is relatively simple. However, when it comes to more complex coding, and when you want it to do a tad more than just providing information, hiring help in doing so would be the best way. Not only in terms of design, but security is also a key factor in assuring a quality website. If the website also acts as a portal for businesses, security would definitely be the issue here.

So, having considered the things to do before building a website, do we actually NEED one? If creating one would boost sales or promote positive implications to oneself, then by all means, go ahead and do what’s best. Yet again, planning is the key to success, in everything we do.

There are, of course, some very professional-looking websites that did cost alot of money to build, but when it comes down to it, even a basic website can do better in many cases. A website can still look very good without your having to spend alot of money to get it made and to get it online.

I’m not a professional writer, but I can spell, and I can pretty much write down what I want to say. I can manipulate graphics but I’m not a pro, and I still built websites for each of my companies and today they are our main source of advertising. We always ask our new customers where they got our phone number from and a large percentage of our new customers say they found us online. Some of my competitors have professionally built websites, and I know that some of them spent thousands of dollars for their’s. But I’ve received many compliments on my sites and I am currently in the top three Google listings for all the keywords I want. Even though I made my own sites, and even though I am not a professional web designer, they are doing very well.

The next biggest myth that I have learned from people is that they believe that hosting a website will cost them alot of money. This is simply not true. Once your site is built, you can host it almost anywhere you want to, and web hosting will cost you anywhere from $10 to $300 per month depending on which services you want or need. Hosting packages come with alot of options including several things that most people don’t even need or will never use, and those extra features obviously determine what price you’ll pay. We’ll talk about website hosting in more detail later.
